How do you handle hostile players 10 Months, 3 Weeks ago Karma: 1
When someone at the table gets mad at me, I usually just tell them it is my first game and I really don't know what I am doing.
Then I ask them to explain it to me or something like that.

One time I did this and the guy apologized to me, said he didn't know.
I said just beginner’s luck that's all.
Then a short while later he noticed that I was play 4 tables and got really mad at me again, I told him I was just trying to maximize my beginners luck since it was my first day and all.

Poker is an emotional game for many. After a losing streak, many people will go on `tilt'. Sometimes someone on tilt may become hostile but in my experience most people will not become hostile. For the small number of times a player becomes hostile, what I do depends on where I am playing.

If you are playing online, you can normally block the chat of a hostile player (which is what I usually do). This way, you can concentrate on playing poker rather than being drawn into what the hostile player is saying. Remember, however, that hostile players are often on tilt so they may be easier to extract money from than non hostile players.

If you are playing in a bricks and mortar game, hostile players are more of a problem; there is no simple way to block their chat! In a casino or card room, the dealer may remove the hostile player from the table. If you feel uncomfortable, probably the best thing to do is to stand up and leave!

If someone is hostile, then I use that to my advantage. I try to make the player more angry, to put him on "tilt."

I watch the chats sometimes, but usually have my screen set on the "info' option, to keep track of where I'm at in the tourney

I usually ignore everyone else, until I knock out the "hostile' player and then type in "DAGGER" (like College Hoops announcer Bill Rafferty) as he disappears from his seat

I don't understand...Why do some players get hostile or mad? I mean, besides they are losing money if money is involved. And what is tilt?

If a player is it "on tilt" it means that their emotions are controlling their play and they are not playing how they usually would. They may call too many hands, bet too many hands etc.

I rarely encounter hostile players. But the few times I have see players turn hostile or mad has always been when money is involved and has always been because the player had lost a big hand.
