Playing Your Opponents to Win PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 12 May 2007

A game of poker is a game of deception.

Ironically, in poker, you might hold the right hand and do the right thing, but get the exact opposite result from what you were expecting. You just don’t know what another player is holding, scheming and planning.

In fact, deceiving and playing your opponents is another skill you must learn in order to play an effective game of poker.

When playing poker, you must know your games, bluffs, moves and tactics. You cannot just sit and throw your money on the table while crossing your fingers in order to win. You have to plan well and execute your game well; but most of all you must know how to play your opponents well.

Keeping Them in the Dark

In poker, it seems great to know how to keep the other players confused, puzzled, and perplexed as much as possible. It is seems good to have them groping around.

However, it is much better if you could learn how to deceive your opponents on having a concrete understanding of what you want them to think you are doing; then, surprise them with an exactly the opposite play or hand.

Try to decieve your opponents into playing based on incorrect information that you have carefully provided.

Most of the time, playing against a players who think they know the game is better than playing against someone who would blunder himself into winning. Playing against a player who thinks (but not too much) can allow you to strategically lead them into playing your game.

Playing the Game

So, how do you play your opponents?

It is very important that you carefully study your opponents and get an idea of their strengths and weaknesses. From there, your play would depend on the information you have surmised.

Observe your opponents and pick a move that would work best for each one of them. Try to lose the bad players at the first turn of the game by playing a defensive mixed low and high hands game.

Typically, bad players often lose with high hands on the first round. However, you must be cautious when playing the subsequent games with the experts.

Be careful with your bluffs as they usually works only with the good and aggressive players. Your position in the game is also vital. Ideally, a good position is a sit on the left side of a weak player or a sit on the right side of a good player.
