Monday, 11 October 2004 You are sitting at the table and you look down at your holecards to find a suited connector. Have you ever wondered what are the odds of flopping a straight, or maybe just catching 2 more cards of the same suit on the flop.
Here are some helpful odds to commit to memory:
Pocket Pair
- The odds are 220 to 1 against being dealt Aces.
- With Aces, you are a minimum of a 4 to 1 favorite against any other hand.
- The odds are 16 to 1 against being dealt any pocket pair.
- With a pocket pair, you are a slight favorite against over cards.
- The odds of flopping a set are 7.5 to 1 against.
- With a pocket pair preflop, your odds are 4.2 to 1 against making a set by the river.
Flush
- Holding two suited cards, your odds are 7.5 to 1 against flopping at least two more cards of the same suit.
- After flopping a flush draw (4 suited cards), your odds are 4.2 to 1 against hitting the flush on the turn and 4.1 to 1 against hitting it on the river.
- With a flush draw after the flop, your odds are 1.9 to 1 against making it by the river.
- With two suited cards preflop, your odds are 16.3 to 1 against making a flush by the river.
Straight
- After flopping an open-end straight draw, your odds are 4.9 to 1 against making your straight on the turn and 4.8 to 1 against making it by the river.
- With an open-end straight draw after the flop, your odds are 2.2 to 1 against making a straight by the river.
- With an inside straight draw, your odds are nearly 11 to 1 against making your hand on either the turn or the river.
...So now you know why you should stop chasing the inside straight draw.
