I agree with you that knowing the odds will take you along way but luck added into the mix just makes the game better.

As far as getting good cards it's all the luck of the draw. But when playing those cards and reading your opponents, it's all skill and some people have it and some people don't. Of course you can have those four cards needing one on the river and hope that it's flipped. Sometimes it is but most times you'll be out quite a bit of money. There's a reason why you see more professionals at the final table than amateurs.
