Friday, 10 March 2006 The first Extreme Poker Championship was held 30 feet underwater of the shores of St. Kitts in the Caribbean. The second EPC is set to take place in the arctic ice fields of Finland at the world’s largest Snow Castle. The event will feature three online qualifiers facing three poker pros, including 2002 WSOP champion Robert Varkonyi.
Built in 2005, the Snow Castle is made of 60,000 cubic feet of snow and ice and maintains a temperature well below freezing. Snow towers, intricate ice sculptures, and a spacious dining hall are trademarks of this frozen masterpiece. Rules for the tourney include rebuying lost chips for an article of clothing. Players are eliminated when they are out of chips or after succumbing to the cold. A spokesman for the tournament said "poker is an endurance sport and we have just made it harder, no one can doubt that playing poker in subzero temperatures, with very little light, requires the utmost concentration, patience and mental stamina." |
