Texas Holdem Quiz - Part 3 PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 06 December 2004
So how are you doing so far? Hopefully, you are 10 for 10. Part 1 of the Quiz looked at what hole cards would be considered the "nuts" in a variety of situations. Part 2 examined the odds of a particular hand and whether or not calling a bet was justified. In Part 3 of the Quiz, you will be the one faced with a decision to bet. In each example, you have the "nuts" after the turn with only the river card to follow. You are considering slow-playing the hand, but you first want to determine how many river cards would allow you to maintain the best hand. Here is an example:

You are holding AdKd and the community cards are 2dJc7dQd. You currently have the "nuts" with an Ace high flush. How many of the 46 unseen cards, would ensure that you are holding "the nuts" after the river?

The answer is 34. Although there is no possibility of a straight flush, a pair on board after the river would create the possibility of your opponent having a full house or four-of-a-kind. Therefore, any of the three remaining 2s, 7s, Js, or Qs would prevent you from having "the nuts."

For each of the following questions, identify the total number of cards (from the remaining 46 unseen cards) that would give you the best hand after the river. When completed, you can scroll down to find the answers.

ANSWERS

  1. 1 - Only 9s would ensure that you still have the best possible hand. All other cards in the deck could potentially make a straight, 4 of a kind, or a higher set than yours.

  2. 4 - The 8c, 8s, 9c, or 9s are the only cards that could guarantee you still have the best hand.

  3. 21 - The cards that would guarantee you still have the best hand are 36 or QA of any suit other than diamonds.

  4. 34 - The only 12 cards that could potentially beat your hand are the remaining three As, Ks, 10s, or 5s. These cards could potentially give someone a full house or 4 of a kind.

  5. 35 - There are 11 cards that could potentially beat you. The 6d, 7d, 10d, Jd, or Qd could make a straight flush, and any of the three remaining 8s or 9s could give someone a higher 4 of a kind.
