Monday, 06 March 2006 Low-limit no-limit cash games are the next step for players who grow weary of the tournament structure, but want to try something other than a limit cash game. In Part I, we focused on the difference between low-limit no-limit cash games and tournaments. In this article, we will discuss how low-limit no-limit cash games online can differ from those in a casino.
Many websites offer information about the quality of the competition at various online poker sites. Some poker sites are known for having skilled competitors, while others are known for their easy games filled with poor players. Although online players are also often stereotyped as being loose and willing to gamble, I find that low-limit no-limit players in a casino are even more willing to mix it up than their online counterparts. As you watch new players join a casino poker table, you often hear them say "I'm new to playing in a casino, but I want to give it a try." Or, "I'm on vacation and people told me that I have to play Texas Hold'em." These are the types of players Matt Damon is referring to in "Rounders" when he says "all the luck in the world isn't gonna change things for these guys. They're simply overmatched." You don't have to be the world's greatest player to take their money. You just need to be a real player who's there with the intention of winning, and be willing to wait for quality hands to do it. They are only there to play and generally willing to reach into their pockets several times before bidding everyone good luck and farewell.
Even the poor online players are still "players." They may not have the skill to routinely increase their bankroll, but they are serious enough about the game to set up a real money account at an online poker room. They are also likely to play more frequently than the casino tourist type player and are less willing to just give their money away. Another difference is that online play offers players anonymity when betting their hand. This can be a powerful tool for a meek player who could be intimidated in a casino environment. Since you can't see them in person, you have less information to determine if they have a real hand or if they are making a bluff at the pot. Your information is limited to their betting patterns and how they played previous hands. In both casino and online games, you will find great players with the skill and knowledge to take your money. You will also find overmatched players who will be leaving the table broke. Always work to improve your game, and you can beat both. |
