Pitfalls that Pro Poker Players Needs to Avoid PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 02 November 2007

To be the best or a pro poker player, you should avoid committing mistakes that can ruin your poker game. Yes, even poker experts make mistakes. The following is a brief rundown on common mistakes that advanced poker players make.

Tilting

Poker is a game that requires a great deal of focus and concentration. A poker player’s mistake in this case is going on tilt.

A tilt can still happen no matter how good a poker player is. Advanced poker players need to learn self-control. At the very least, they must be able to read the signs so they can give up the current game and come back when they’re more composed.

Poker is a formidable mind game. Thus, it is important that you keep your mind clear by not tilting.

Becoming Overly Complacent

When playing poker, you should be confident but never cocky. Being cocky is one of the most common mistakes that advanced poker players commit.

What does being cocky mean, exactly? It is leading with your mouth and not with your hands. It is telling everyone at the table how good you are. Furthermore, it is believing that you are too good to beat, whatever the game and the circumstances. Being cocky can cost you your bankroll for you’re likely to take too many risks even when they are unwarranted.

Know Your Strengths and Weaknesses

Always know what you can do and what you can’t do. Good poker players know their capabilities and limitations. Some poker players play high stakes on games that they have not mastered yet, and they lose badly because they did not take the time to evaluate how good they are, what their playing styles are and how they can improve.

Acting on Instinct

Another mistake that good poker players commit is not paying attention to the game. This usually happens to more experienced players. Having gone through enough games, they no longer pay much attention to any particular game. Experience has provided them with instinctive reactions to certain situations.

It’s good to have fast reactions (which can be valuable in intimidating other players), but not taking the time to think things through can have dire consequences. You may miss nuances and little tells that would have made you act differently.

Becoming Too Excited

Lastly a good poker player must not get too excited. Even if you have the nuts, do not betray this fact by word, act or gesture. Always keep your excitement down. This will keep the betting going and the pot growing.
