Sit-and-Go Tournaments: Playing Long-Handed to Short-Handed PDF Print E-mail

Sit-and-Go (SnG) tournaments can be your ticket to a bigger bankroll and, therefore, makes an ideal game if you are a little short on cash. At the same time, playing a SnG tournament gives you a lot of opportunity to practice your poker skills. The most common game played in a SnG tournament is the Texas Hold’em which could either be a No-limit or a limit game.

The fame of SnGs comes from a very special characteristic. The game comes around with three specific stages. The strategies necessary for each stage primarily depend on the blinds and each player’s chip stacks. The secret behind winning a Sit-and-Go tournament lies on a player’s ability to react correctly during each of the game’s stages.

Aside from the distinct stages in the SnG game, a player must also keep an eye out on the number of players in the table to employ a good SnG strategy. SnG tournament players need to employ a totally different strategy depending on the number of players on the table. A long-handed SnG tournament needs a different approach compared to a short-handed SnG.

Playing Tight from the Start

When playing the Texas Hold’em SnG most experienced players would advise new players to play tight. Though good poker players would develop their own strategy when it comes to a sit-and-go tournament, generally a tight start gives you a lot of advantages that could help you win the tournament.

When starting the game on a long-handed table, a tight start will give you a three-fold advantage. First, the table will soon be reduced to 6-7 players instead of the original 10. It is basically easier to deal with a short-handed table than a long-handed one.

Playing tight will also give you the chance to observe each player on the table. Take note of the playing and betting habits of your opponents. The information that you could gather will come in handy later on the game.

Playing tight will also let you play aggressively later on in the game. Starting the game with a tight play will make your opponents believe that you fight only when you have good cards. Such a reputation will help you steal some blinds along the way without arousing any suspicion.

In essence, therefore, you need to be tight and patient in the beginning and the middle stages of the game on a long handed SnG. However, be aggressive during the end game. At the same time take notice of the blinds and chip stacks before going into your aggressive tactics.
